Death was never a mystery to him. Death was easy, a game – it was dying that held the fascination, the fears, the myriad routes to the inevitable destination. Swift or slow, soft or savage or screaming... he eased some on their way and forced others, always knowing that some day, somehow, he would face the journey himself.
Some day. Just... not yet.
And so he dodged bullets, executioners, irate lovers until, finally, he embraced death willingly... and found himself rejected, the way barred on every approach.
The trouble with cheating death, it seemed, was that eventually death simply stopped playing.

I enjoy reading everyone's ideas about what happened to Jack between Bad Wolf and the beginning of Torchwood, and this is certainly one of the better ones.
Hopefully come ep 11 of Dr Who or series 2 of Torchwood we'll get a few more answers.
