It took more effort for him to stay behind than it would have for him to escape. And, really, there was no way he wasn't going to be instantly contained and used as a punchbag, and I think he knew it. But if he's there taking the brunt of it, then the others aren't, and he's got that whole "fixed point in space-time" thing going, which they don't.
Well, that's the only explanation that makes sense to me, anyway. :)
