My feeling is that RTD said all he really had to say about the Doctor in DW1, & after that--pfft. I still enjoy the series a lot, but the characters don't engage me like they did in DW1.
I think you're right about Ianto. TW1 vs TW3: well, we could write a couple of volumes on that subject, but suffice it to say that ant hill & wolf pack are pretty good analogies, though I'd like to add that their respective directors had retained different firmness of grip on reality.
