I think the thing with most shows is that they rattle along at such a rate that there are a lot of details thrown up that then never get given the on-screen attention that they might otherwise deserve... but that's what makes them ideal for fanfic. With this situation, I never thought that Jack was conscious for all that time (he really would go insane), but it all connected quite beautifully to the Arthurian mythology of the King Under the Hill, waiting to rise again in his country's hour of need. I don't know if that was the intention of the writers (probably not!) but it's rather nice to be able to tie things into the native legends of Wales.
