World Cup musings
Jul. 9th, 2006 09:54 pmAnd so another World Cup draws to an end - it's been a great month of thrills, spills, heroics, bloodshed, unexpected results, moments of lunacy and some quite spectacular football. I know that it's the fannish norm to sneer at sport, and especially at football, but I love the international spirit of the tournament and the near-party atmosphere that you get here in London, where the England flag is far from the only one on display (we have a lot of cars around my area that have been happily flying the flags of both England and Ghana). I've come to the conclusion that the World Cup is probably more fun for countries that have never won it before, where there's not the same sort of expectation of victory, just a desire to get as far as possible. Still, it was a hell of a lot of fun even with Sven being a bit of a twit! :D
(Although my now long-healed knee gave something of a twinge of sympathy for Michael Owen. Internal knee injuries hurt, dammit!)
( Comments on Final results here, for those who care.... )
It occurs to me that there's a very good chance that I'll be living on the other side of the planet by the time the next World Cup rolls around, which will likely require me to get up at 2am to watch it. The sad thing is that I'll probably do it.
Roll on Euro 2008! :D
