I can't believe that Jack would have stayed with Torchwood if he hadn't liked the people there, and while his recruitment was a shock for him, it rather had to be given that he needed something to snap him out of his self-destructive fit! I always tend to see Torchwood as a continuum for Jack - the people come and go, but the team is always there providing him with some sort of stability. So I always write the team, of whatever time, as Jack's family-of-sorts - he deserves one, after all. :)
