Jack watched the Doctor cradle the Master's corpse, feeling an odd detachment as the ancient alien rocked and keened and choked on his grief like a bereaved child. It would have been the work of an instant, the bloody fantasies of the past year resolved with a single well-placed bullet, the rogue Gallifreyan's control removed along with half his skull. It would have been so easy....
And would have solved nothing. Better the Doctor mourned his dead species anew than that monster be allowed to live.
Suicide now removed the need for execution later.
